Feedback of final video

After finishing our music video we have put it on youtube and gave and received feedback for each group.

*Visuals worked with the transitions.
*visuals suited the lyrics.
*The ripple effect transition was'nt particularly liked but unfortunately necessary.
*Liked the beginning and ending shot mirroring.
*Entrances and Exits of characters were liked.
*Liked the Playstation/ Xbox concept.
*Narrative and As Live were thought to be particularly original.
*Intertextuality of Rockband was liked.
*The angle of the shot where Amy, singer, comes, singing, down and close to the camera is liked.
*Th pitch matching the video exactly was noticed.
*Amy's performance - Great!
*The illustrative of the pieces of paper reading '19' and '20' was noticed not to work very well when we zoomed the shot in on FinalCut, as it was pixellated and grainy.
*lip syncing was said to be good.
*The concept was 'simplistic and playful'.
*Well portrayed narrative.

Props & Costume list

Props

We used many more different props for the 'as live' footage than we did for the food-fight sequence.

  • Playstation - Finally, we ended up using a playstation rather than the Xbox as the generation of the Xbox was wrong and therefore the usb's were uncompatable so we used the playstation instead.
  • food - We used a variety of foods for the food-fight, of which consisted of various flavours and colours of angel delight, rice pudding, jelly, squarty cream on flan bases (with cherries to go on top).
  • paper reading '19' and '20' - we used these in the 'as live' footage, as it includes the illustrative in the video. (therefore involving the music video conventions).
  • rockband - Instead of using real instruments we used the light, plastic controller, instruments of rockband for a comical effect.

Costumes

We decided on bright, in you face, colours

rockband: colourful t-shirts and miss match trousers or shorts, colourful tights.

food-fight: singer - miss match t-shirt to trousers, foodfighters - white lab coats

Shooting Day (Images)

The shooting day for creating the footage for the food fight was a long day as it meant that we had to make up all the food for everyone to throw at one another. Throughout the day we documented our progress in the form of images, taken on our personal hand held digital cameras and the cameras on our mobile phones. Here are just a few pictures from the day:

Here is the finish product of the food prep process. As you can see there are tubs full of custard, jelly, angel delight and cans of rice pudding, whipped cream and flan bases for 'cream cakes' that will later in the filming be thrown by us 'band members' at the 'singer', Amy. We have also got cherries to put on top for the finishing touch detail.

Here are some macro shots of the food that will be thrown in peoples faces. Here is custard that we made for everyone to throw at one another.

And this is angel delight. We made three different flavours so that we would have a variety of colours in the food-fight, we want the colours to show up clearly on the lab coats that people will be wearing to protect their clothes and show up the food clearly.

Whisking angel delight fun!

Testing that the whipped cream works.....

.... Because we wouldnt want to be unprepared now would we!

Yet another macro shot of the food we are going to be using. This one is a mixture of jellies, although once we had got the food to the site it melted a bit therefore was a little bit runny, but still usable.

After filming: rice pudding in the face, but they loved it!

After filming close up shots: Chocolate angel delight in the face, thank goodness for lab coats to protect everyone's clothes.

Fun times! We tried to keep the camera running as much as possible in case anyone did anything particularly hooligan-ish, for example walking around with tubs on there heads.

Lloyd got a bit hungry after having angel delight and jelly thrown all over him.

Unimpressed?

After we attacked Amy with the cream cakes, for the final shot of this section. Amy decided to get her revenge.

Overall the shooting of the footage went extremely well and we created lots of footage to use and therefore was very productive.

Angles

We are going to be shooting from a multiple amount of angles to get a large range of shots. This will put the audience closer to the action of the band and food fighting. Using shots like low angle tilted shots give the impression that the band are superior. Also close up shots, of the artists, and preferably many more. These images will give an example of the other kind of shots we are intending on filming:

We need to shoot the artists, each, playing their instrument from a head on mid-long shot.

We need lots of close up shots of the singer, as they are lead the song, preferably more of this artist than the others as the focus would be best to be on her.

We like the idea of shooting the instruments being played from behind the artist's back, to make the audience feel closer to the action, close ups.

This shot gives an idea of the close up shots, of the instruments, we are going to be doing. It also works as an example of the low angle shots we are going for, when shooting the singing artist to make her appear superior.

Test Footage & Location Shots

We have taken location shots of our proposed location for our food fight:

Granchester Medows

The reason for choosing a wide open meadow is because it is an open space, which will therefore portray the confusion of the character's (singers') mood. The mood of which, is that she is confused and stressed about her boyfriend, with all these different feelings about him, as the lyrics interpret. And an advantage to having the food fight in the meadows is that it will be easy to clean up and accessible for the large number of people we need to participate in the food fight.

We have taken location shots for our proposed rock band footage:

ANIMATIC FEEDBACK

  • what worked?
  • what didn't
  • style/genre
  • music video convention
  • concept clear?
Drum solos shown well by shot of drums.

The other emphasized sounds e.g. guitar, were shown well with close up shots.

The as live footage was conventional to the style and genre showing instruments and close ups of band members.

Lots of different views and angles meaning the as live footage won't get repetitive like it sometimes can.

Some people were concerned about product placement (showing the Xbox) but we have come to the conclusion that it will not be a problem.

No one commented on the concept or narrative so we are hoping it is quite clear. (E.g. Shots with the food fight and the singer at the front.)

The Pitch

Summary Of Content

- Our initial and potential idea for out music video is to have two set pieces of footage.
One is a 'live' based footage of the band playing instruments, in beat to the music, the only thing that will make this different from other music videos is that the drums, base guitar, electric guitar and microphone will be the controllers of the video game 'rock band'. This takes place in a living room of an average persons home.
The second is the 'narrative', of which we have not decided on a specific idea. Yet the ideas we have come up with include the band members, or others, having fun, possibly having a food fight and or acting out of a story either related to the lyrics or not, we still need to have a closer look at the lyrics and if they tell a story.
We had the idea of including an 'action' sequence at the beginning of the video, this will be the band/ players of the game plugging in their individual controllers leading into the performance based footage. Another way to gradually move into the song could be an idea we had, to gather a large group of people to 'march' down a street with brass instruments, as the intro to the song, the bit with no lyrics is quite jazzy. We could then include this in the cut over footage from the 'live' footage to make it relevent, aswell as it being very fun to watch.

The way in which this video relates to our initial idea is that the artists are playing the video game and it cuts between them playing the game in reality to them physically in the game, in their sleep.
This could video could be watched as if separated into 3 different pieces of footage. 1st is the artists sitting in the two chairs with controllers in their hands and the 2nd is them physically in the game, giving a sort of serial effect. The 3rd also has this serial effect, with a colourful background and the artists and dancers all in unison dancing along to the music.
Another element that is similar to our initial idea is the opening, as it shows the game being played on the television from a players point of view.

This video uses Goodwin's six points well, as we can clearly indicate how each is used.

1.The Genre for this video is pop and the characteristics used to show this are colourful based backdrops and costumes, obvious characters and an upbeat/ catchy tune.

2.Visual/ Lyrics are presented amplified and illustrated using the video game footage to help portray extreme curcumstances that wouldn't happen in reality.

3.The relationship between the music and the visuals are made through dance performance cut into the video and the music has not been edited to the beat of the music as clearly as the dance fits the music, but it still is cut to the music at some times noticeable.

4.The need to sell the artists is used strongly in this video as the artists appear in all three types of footage. The artists sing to the camera and have close up shots of their faces for the audience to recognise their faces.

5.The intertextual references in this video is to video games, they made up a game based completely around their song. The lyrics in the chorus are a mixture of two languages.

6.Voyeurism is used subtly as the woman are wearing modest clothing. The two police women are dressed less appropriate then a police woman in reality, as they are wearing tight flattering shirts, sun glasses, inside, why?, and glamourized makeup.

Location ideas

This is Sussex Street in Cambridge and this is the kind of place where we were intending on shooting the 'marching'/ possible cut over footage. (the food fight would need to take place outside, not sure where yet though).

This image is an example of the type of place we are planning to shoot the rock band footage.
This image portrays an idea of where we want to have the food fight footage to take place.

Presentataion feedback

After presenting our ideas to the class we got a great response back from the class. Primarily the debate of copy right, in showing the game 'rock band' and the 'xbox 360', occurred but as long as we do not show footage from the game it will only be considered product placement.

After this the issue of the food fight came up, this was because it was unclear to the class how we are planning on shooting this footage. We would basically have a stump for the singer to be standing on singing her heart out, whilst everyone around her in a circle will be dancing around and throwing food around.

An alternative idea of having the food fight in a room with white paper on the walls was mentioned as the issue of weather would be a problem. The way that this would be an advantage is that we could show the splat of the colourful food more effectively, although we cannot find a place where there is a room available or big enough for us to cover in paper and throw food around.

Picking The Song

When choosing the song we want to use for our music video we looked at 4 different aspects to help us chose, such as:

-Genre
-Narrative
-Lyrics
-and Pace

Genre - the genre would help us to imagine what kind of video to make, for example R&B tends to be story based.

Narrative - by listening to the lyrics we could hear a clear story/ narrative.

Lyrics - It is important to be able to hear the lyrics clearly, as this would make lip-sinking a lot easier. Also the lyrics tell a story of what the composer is trying to get through to his/hers audience.

Pace - by listening to the pace we are able to ditermine what kind of video to make for example, rave or story telling.

(name the other songs we got to chose from)
Then we listened to all 13 songs and noted them on all the above points.
